Budget day was a time to think about the difficulties that India faces today, and how the levers of government should be used to help make things better. A key idea is: There is limited capability to do things, and we should prioritise.
A new direction in science policy
A few years ago, R. A. Mashelkar, Susan Thomas and I started thinking about science policy in India, going after fundamental questions of why, how much, what and how. This thinking came out as : Rethinking innovation policy in India: Amplifying spillovers through contracting-out, R. A. Mashelkar, Ajay Shah, Susan Thomas, Accounting Theory and Practice, Volume 1, December 2024.
A lot is happening in Indian science policy, including a big new step in the budget speech. On 6 April, we wrote an opinion piece in the Indian Express, bringing together four important developments, and interpreting them through the strategic sense of our paper.
Emerging Markets Conference, 2025, call for papers
